Life’s tough for a vampire thief on the run–just ask Pandora Scott, she knows. Four years ago she ran away from home after everyone she loved betrayed her. But now her annoyingly grown up (and handsome) ex boyfriend is stalking her, begging her to return. A mysterious vamp with a particularly dangerous (and sexy) stare keeps popping unexpectedly into her life. The extremely powerful head vampire of New York is hunting her down because she may (or may not) have broken into his highly-secure, highly-secretive personal vault. And the fate she’s been trying to outrun? Well, it’s about to catch up. Because even a super-speedy vamp with the ability to disappear can’t escape her own destiny.

A brand new spinoff to Midnight Fire, a bestselling series with over 200,000 copies sold and over 5000 5-star reviews on Goodreads! Fans will enjoy special appearances from Kira, Luke and Tristan while falling in love with the new characters and new adventure of Midnight Ice. *Please note, you do not need to read the books of Midnight Fire to enjoy Frost (Midnight Ice Book 1). They are two standalone series with character crossover.

Excerpt from FROST (Midnight Ice, #1):

All she wanted to do now was forget. Forget Jax, forget everything he’d stirred up, forget her birthday. So, she downed another bloody cocktail, this time O-negative. And another after that. She let the feeding frenzy take over, let the high of fresh life wash through her.

She drank.

And danced.

And lost herself in the blood and the music and the touch of other cold bodies just like hers, searching for that little spark of life, reveling in it.

“You look good enough to eat,” a sultry voice whispered in her ear.

Pandora whipped around lightning fast, flashing her fangs. “I bite.”

The man smiled, lips practically dripping with sin. “Me too.”

Normally, this was when she’d punch and run. Seduction wasn’t really her thing. It just made her think of another boy and another time she’d never get back. But tonight was different. Tonight she wanted to be free. Tonight she was determined to move on, to move forward.

So she grinned back, taking the stranger in. And really, a girl could do worse, much worse. He was tall, broad, with bright golden hair that seemed almost aflame in the darkness of the club. His vampire-blue eyes were just as bright as hers, flashing with unabashed hunger, brazen want. His skin, though, was what really caught her eye. It was sun-kissed and bronzed, not pallid, not washed out by his ebony shirt. Somehow he looked almost warm to the touch.

Before she could stop herself, Pandora lifted her fingers, stretching for the triangle of hard skin at the base of his throat, exposed between two sets of open buttons.

He stepped swiftly to the side.

The darkness seemed to follow, wisps of ebony clinging to his frame, undulating with his every movement.

“Not yet,” he murmured, never once taking his eyes off her.

The longer he held her gaze, the more familiar it seemed to become, as though she’d seen those eyes before, as though this wasn’t the first time they had caressed her body.

“Have we met?” she asked.

His smile deepened, filling with secrets she could tell he had no intention of spilling. “Not like this.”

“Like what then?”

But he looked away without answering, sweeping his stare down to her lips, to every inch of exposed skin, lifting back to her throat, pausing there. She didn’t move. There was a dangerous sort of confidence about him, but against her will, she found it alluring, intriguing in a forbidden way. She’d always been drawn to things she wasn’t supposed to have. Usually, she took them anyway.

She reached out again, trying to touch him.

He moved deftly away, almost made of air as he circled behind her.

“Pandora,” he whispered into her ear, breath like a kiss against the soft skin of her neck, making her shiver.

And then the word he spoke registered.

Her name.

He knew her name.

“How…?” She spun around, trailing off when she realized there was nothing there, no one there.

A ghostly finger brushed against her elbow, tracing a burning path up her arm. “You’re not the only one who knows how to disappear.”

Pandora spun again.

But he was gone.

4.25Penguins
Quick Reasons: tidy, clean wrap-up to an action-packed series; I felt the element of surprise was a bit lacking; loved the use of POV, though a bit disappointed we didn’t get more from Sam; small character redemptions for the win!

HUGE thanks to Kaitlyn Davis for having me along for this wild ride and sending me a free digital galley in exchange for an honest review! This in no way altered my read of or opinions on this title.

To say this series was a hurricane sweeping through my reading world would be an understatement, Penguins. From the get-go, Kaitlyn Davis left me feeling a little bit off-kilter, as if she could yank the rug out from under me any time she chose (which she did, often and brutally!) I did feel as if this potential installment lacked a bit of that “element of surprise” feeling I’ve so grown to expect from this author. Even knowing this was the final piece of this puzzle, I went into this read hoping for one final satisfying plot twist, which I sadly didn’t find.

Shatter Q1.jpg

These characters arc gorgeously, though! There are several small, heart-wrenching redemptions written into the main action that caught me off-guard but left me endlessly pleased. Some of the smaller players were recognized and given room to breathe on their own a bit, which I enjoyed seeing. I was a tiny bit disappointed that we didn’t get more of Sam, however. His character, as full of hatred and darkness as he is, sort of took the backseat–he felt very stunted to me in this installment, honestly, which might not have been the best way to deliver him. I feel as if the story was lacking a huge amount of tension and drama that could otherwise have been present, with more of Sam’s POV.

This was, overall, a thoroughly clean and tidy ending to an explosive series, and I’m so happy to have been a part of the journey! I definitely recommend this entire series to readers seeking exciting new adventures, characters with huge hearts and big flaws, and action-packed epicness! The war is ending, Penguins; beware the shadows and their kin.

Oh my Penguins, oh my Penguins, oh my PEEEEEEEEENGUIN FOLLOWERS!  I have missed all of your beaks and apologize for disappearing.

I mean, sort of.  Apparently I haven’t posted a StS since September!?!?! Agh, I fail so hardcore.  Okay, so…some stuff and things that have been happening lately.  Let’s see.

Uhm.  Well, I already updated you all on the whole happenings with the now ex-guy, so I don’t need to go back into THAT madness.  I’ve been spending a LOT of time…uh….not at my apartment the last few weeks, which is fantabulous–and super different at the same time.  I haven’t spent this much time out of my living quarters since, like, college.  So.  It’s a bit overwhelming sometimes, but in SUCH A GOOD WAY I’m totally not complaining at all!

I will be moving in the next few weeks, into a house with a couple of friends and their menagerie of fur babies.  I’m super excited about it honestly–it’s time to start a new NEW chapter in my life, and I’m super ready to take the world head-on.  Or at least attempt to.  I mean sometimes the world has sharp edges, you know?  So…I’ll try to also remember to pack a helmet.

I recently began learning how to play Magic, which is entertaining.  I’ve also been introduced to some of the things I’ve been missing out on–like Rick and Morty.  I cannot believe I hadn’t watched this show before now, honestly–what even is wrong with my talons?!

Other than thaaaaaaat… I mean, that’s basically it.  I’m just sort of taking things a moment at a time, trying my best to live my life by just going with the flow.  It’s so far working out pretty well for me–I can’t wait to see what 2018 has in store, I’m keeping my fingers crossed for mostly awesometastic things!

Hunted Fate
(Threads of the Moirae, #3)

Jennifer Derrick
Published by: Clean Teen Publishing
Publication date: July 24th 2017
Genres: Mythology, Romance, Young Adult

Alex and Atropos have taken refuge at an abandoned mountain resort compound. Atropos is a wanted woman in hiding, and the downtime with her soul mate is a nice change of pace. But the peace will be short-lived. The authorities are after her for her role in the attack on the city of Charlotte. Zeus has put a bounty on her head. There’s also a war to prepare for—and if she wins, the gods will be deposed once and for all. But first she needs to track down Gaia, and even that won’t be simple. Gaia resides at the bottom of the ocean, and the humans and gods are already hot on Atropos’ trail…

A heart-pounding romantic adventure where Greek mythology and modern-day life collide, Hunted Fate is the third book in the epic Threads of the Moirae series by Jennifer Derrick.

EXCERPT:

“We need whoever provides security around here. Or Hades. They’re bound to be the ones who can open this. If we can find them, we can drag them down here and slap their hand on this thing to get it open,” Alex says.

“We need another way,” Sara says, shaking her head. “We haven’t seen a single person since we got here. It’s too time consuming to track them down. And we’ll never get Hades.”

“Anyone know of any other ways to crack a palm plate?” I ask.

“Short of finding a valid fingerprint and going through an awful lot of steps to create a fake finger, the only other way is to break down the software controlling it,” Alex says.

“Are any of you hackers?”

Alex raises his hand.

“You can hack this?” I ask. “I didn’t know you were a hacker.”

“I’m not. But there isn’t a lot to do when you’re stuck at home with a terminal disease or trapped in a crappy boarding school. I taught myself a few things, made a few online friends who were a little shady. Depending on how sophisticated the software is, I might be able to crack it.”

“Would it be controlled from the computer out front?”

“It might be. Or it might be controlled from a central server that’s who knows where. No way to know without looking,” he says.

“That computer is password protected. If you try to force it, you may set off alarms.”

“Then I’ll have to be careful,” he says, heading back to the lobby.

We follow and gather around the desk while he works. The keys clack under his fingers as he mutters instructions to himself.

“Okay, I’m in the system,” he says. “While I’m here, I’m going to shut down those security cameras. No need for everyone to know where we are.”

The TV feed blinks and is gone.

He keeps typing and clicking and muttering. The rest of us sit down on the floor and wait. There’s nothing we can do.

“Huh. That could be tricky,” he says.

“What?” I ask, getting up and going around the desk so I can see his screen. Not that the gibberish there means squat to me.

“The system that controls the fingerprint scanners also controls the card locks. Worse, it’s not separated by floor. I’m not good enough to bring down only one piece of the system. It’s all or nothing.”

“What’s the problem?” I ask.

“It means that the only thing standing between us and whatever is behind those cell doors is the hope that none of them try the doors. If the inmates figure out the doors are open, then security will be the least of our problems. All of them could walk right out of here.”

“Do it,” I tell him. “It’s not like we’ll be broadcasting the locks are down. No one will notice. Hopefully.”

“Okay,” he says and goes back to pounding on the keys.

After a few minutes, the computer beeps and Alex pushes away from it.

“Done,” he says.

The words are barely out of his mouth when a series of small pops echoes around the room. They sound like they’re both surrounding us and simultaneously heading away from us.

“Aw, shit,” I say. “The locks. We forgot they make noise! We are idiots. Come on,” I say, racing for the doors on the right.

We slam through the doors and pull up in front of door number four. No one is coming into the hall yet. I’m hoping the inmates think it’s a trap and are too intimidated to try their doors. Either that or they didn’t hear the locks release. Please, just let me get out of here before hell literally opens, I think.

EXCERPT:

August placed a hand on my shoulder, squeezing gently. The heat of his palm burned into my bare skin. I shivered.

That reassuring touch turned into a caress, trailing along my collarbone. I swallowed hard. His gaze was fixated, as if mesmerized, as callused fingertips ran a trail up my throat, along my jaw. He cupped the back of my head, sifting through the dark strands.

August leaned forward. My heart jumped in my chest. Soft lips brushed my ear.

“What are you feeling right now?”

His voice was low and husky, inflaming every inch of me.

“I don’t know,” I stammered.

The hitch of my breath, the trembling of my fingers, the flush of my cheeks, told a different story.

I felt his lips curve into a teasing smile.

“Liar.”

BLURB:

What isn’t written, isn’t remembered. Even your crimes.

Nadia lives in the city of Canaan, where life is safe and structured, hemmed in by white stone walls and no memory of what came before. But every twelve years the city descends into the bloody chaos of the Forgetting, a day of no remorse, when each person’s memories – of parents, children, love, life, and self – are lost. Unless they have been written.

In Canaan, your book is your truth and your identity, and Nadia knows exactly who hasn’t written the truth. Because Nadia is the only person in Canaan who has never forgotten.

But when Nadia begins to use her memories to solve the mysteries of Canaan, she discovers truths about herself and Gray, the handsome glassblower, that will change her world forever. As the anarchy of the Forgetting approaches, Nadia and Gray must stop an unseen enemy that threatens both their city and their own existence – before the people can forget the truth. And before Gray can forget her.

Quick Reasons: wait, this wasn’t set on Earth?! what even?!?!; awesome, well-written characters; interesting, entertaining plot premise; I don’t even know how to handle this book right now; so many unanswered questions, no pages left in this book!

When I first added this book to my TBR, I’m almost certain I’d taken the time to read the book blurb. I remember being super excited about the premise…but time has a way of settling in and making us forget, doesn’t it? When I actually sat down to read this novel, all I remembered of the blurb was that some sort of mass memory loss occurred. So basically, I knew absolutely nothing about what I was getting myself into. Good times, Penguins–as I’m sure you all already know, I am all about going into books blind!

TF Quote1

So if I told you that I knew, when I began this journey, that this book wasn’t set on Earth after some form of apocalypse… I’d have to call myself a humongous liar. Honestly, I was POSITIVE we were on Earth…right up until Nadia and Gray break into the cave and discover the truth. And I might be wrong, but I felt that perhaps this minute detail was left unknown for a purpose. I feel as if it might have been meant to act as a “shocking” revelation–and it worked, for me at least. So kudos to Sharon Cameron if that was done on purpose!

These characters are complex and well-written, though I felt we got a bit short-changed on certain plot points (for instance, Nadia’s dad–what’s the deal with that situation?! what exactly did he change about her/her family’s books?! WHY did he change them?!) Of course, this is probably partially due to who the POV belongs to–Nadia, for obvious reasons, wouldn’t necessarily have ALL the big answers. Still, certain things are left decidedly more vague than I’d like–though perhaps book 2 is meant to shed light on all the dark corners. I certainly hope that’s the case, at least!

TF Quote2.png

This was, overall, a thought-provoking and entertaining read, though a bit vague and gray on certain plot points. I’d recommend this to lovers of science fiction, dystopians set on planets NOT Earth, and spunky characters seeking hidden truths. I cannot WAIT to see where book 2 takes us! Tell me, Penguins; will you Forget, or remember?

Q&A with Weston Parker

Name Weston Parker

Age 30

Where are you from: Huntsville, Texas

Fiona: When and why did you begin writing?

I joined my sister Ali Parker in 2015 in the business. I started by doing analytics for the company and from time to time would write plots for some of her books. We began to talk one night about stepping out and writing one of my own books. I was against the idea at first, but when we released my first novel the response was so great that I wanted to continue writing.

Fiona: When did you first consider yourself a writer?

I’m still fairly new to the whole writing scene, so it is still hard for me to consider myself a writer. It really is a surreal feeling to finish a novel and put your own name on it. I do welcome the time that I will wake up and see myself as a writer.

Fiona: Do you see writing as a career?

At first, it was hard to see it as a career. I never saw myself as a writer or that it would be enough for a career, but as the years have moved on with the business, it is much easier to see this as a full-time career.

Fiona: If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything in your latest book?

Our books have been moving pretty quickly as of late. I don’t believe I would change anything in the books. When I write the books, I try to look at every emotional factor and find the best way to connect with the reader, and I believe we did that with this book.

Fiona: Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?

There is not enough thanks that I can give to the readers. When Ali and I started, we really wanted to push the fact that we wanted to connect to the readers. We grew up reading novels to give us an escape from our reality, and we wanted to give the same reprieve to our readers. If there is one thing that I could say to our readers it would be thank you so much for the love and support and we hope that we are giving the same love and support back to you.

EXCERPT:

“What are you thinking?” Dad asked, knocking me back to the present.

My head shook subconsciously. “Nothing, really. Just trying to figure out all this change, trying to make sense of it, somehow.”

“It’s not easy,” he agreed. “And it’s only gonna get harder.”

I stared at him with wide doe eyes, silently pleading for some sort of direction.

“What should I do?” I asked. “Should I live my life as best I can and try to ignore the evil going on all around me? Or should I make it my life’s work to try to change that evil into good? Is it even worth it to try?”

Dad blew out a deep breath and pushed the rest of his stromboli aside. His fingers laced atop the table.

“I can’t tell you what to do, sweetheart, but I’ll tell you what I think. Should you live your life to the fullest? Absolutely, no contest. Should you ignore the evil around you? No, I wouldn’t ignore it. Given what you are, there’s a good chance it’ll come looking for you regardless.”

He licked his lips and paused before continuing. I stayed silent.

“Striving to make the world a better place…it’s a noble endeavor, but a very difficult one. Is it worth it to try? I think if your heart’s in it, if it’s something you feel strongly about and it’s something honorable and good, then it’s always worth it to try. I can’t guarantee you’ll succeed, and many times it might feel like all you’re doing is trudging uphill through two feet of shit and a thunderstorm. It might even be like that for the rest of your life, but if you care, truly and passionately, then no matter what happens in the end, you’ll be glad you did it.”

The sound of a pin dropping would have seemed as loud as shattering glass. There were no words in my head or my mouth, just a vast emptiness as I tried to absorb and process what he’d just said.

Unfortunately, there was no time.

EXCERPT:

“So what’s Hannah like?” Tess sank into the chair next to him. Dan refrained from telling her to go to bed. For once she wanted to talk—he’d spend all night with her if necessary.

“She’s nice. Funny and smart, too.”

Tess winced. “Sounds great.” Her tone implied anything but.

Dan nudged her. “Trust me, she is. I didn’t think you’d want to hear other kinds of stuff.”

“Eww, no. Where’d you guys go?”

“I took her to the planetarium, and afterward, to Isabella’s.”

Tess sat up straight. “You took her there? I thought you were joking!”

“What? She liked it.” “Really? Or was she just pretending?” He paused and considered Hannah’s reaction. It hadn’t seemed fake. He’d been careful not to overload her with too much geek data, which might fascinate him but bore others. No, he was sure she’d liked it.

“Her eyes didn’t glaze over, and she pulled me along to show me things she thought were interesting. So I’d have to say really.”

“Weird. Are you going to see her again?”

This was worse than he expected, as he tried to keep from squirming in his seat under Tess’ direct gaze. “I hope so.”

“When do I get to meet her?” “You’ve met her, Tess. At the JCC concert.”

“I know, Dad, but when do I get to really meet her? If you like her enough to go out with her so often, I should at least get to know her better. Invite her over for dinner.”

He glanced at his watch. “Shouldn’t you be…in bed or something?” He regretted his eagerness to talk to her. Well, that was his feeling lots of times as the father of a teenager, but this time she was talking about Hannah. And for some reason, she made him feel like his mother was interrogating him, rather than his daughter. He needed to regain the upper hand. Somehow. “Dinner’s a good idea, Tess. Just not right now.”

“Why not? You’re a good cook. Everyone has to eat. You can invite her here, impress her with your culinary skills, and she and I can get to know each other better. What’s the problem?”

The idea had so many problems her compliment didn’t hit him until after.

“Thanks,” he said.

“For what?”

“For telling me I’m a good cook.”

“You’re welcome. But changing the subject won’t work.”

Damn. He ran a hand through his hair and remembered he needed a haircut. Turning in his seat, he grabbed his phone and added it to tomorrow’s to-do list. “Tess, I think it’s too soon in our relationship for this to happen.”

“Too soon? What’s too soon about it? You’ve been dating a couple of weeks, right?”

“Ten days.” Was it only ten days? “You have a daughter.”

He nodded.

“So, it’ll look weird if you keep me hidden away, like Mr. Rochester’s wife.”

“Oh, a literary reference,” he said. “Nice touch.”

She grinned. “I thought you’d appreciate it. As my reward, I think you should listen to me. I could always come with you somewhere if you don’t want her at the apartment.”

Letting out a sigh, he faced her. “Like a chaperone? Oh, sounds fun. Come here.”

She stood and he pulled her into a hug. “I’ll think about it. I’m glad you’re okay with the idea of me dating.”

Tess shrugged. “I don’t know. I mean, Hannah seems nice, but do you have time to date? You always tell me how busy you are.”

He pulled her into another hug. “No matter what I do, I’ll always have time for you. I promise.”

Author Bio:

When I was a little girl and couldn’t fall asleep, my mother would tell me to make up a story. Pretty soon, my head was filled with these stories and the characters that populated them. Each character had a specific personality, a list of likes and dislikes, and sometimes, even a specific accent or dialect. Even as an adult, I think about the characters and stories at night before I fall asleep, or in the car on my way to or from one of my daughters’ numerous activities (hey, anything that will drown out their music is a good thing).

One day, I started writing them down (it was either that or checking into the local mental hospital—the computer was way less scary) and now I’m a published author. My first book, A Heart of Little Faith, was just declared a Finalist in the Fiction: Romance category of the 2016 Best Book Awards.

In the real world, I’m the mother of two amazing daughters and wife of one of the smartest men I know. I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, reading, traveling and watching TV. In between chauffeuring my daughters to after-school activities that require an Excel spreadsheet to be kept straight, I run youth group activities, train the dog we recently adopted from a local shelter, and cook dinners that fit the needs of four very different appetites. I also write freelance articles for magazines, newspapers, and edit newsletters.

When all of that gets overwhelming, I retreat to my computer, where I write stories that let me escape from reality. In my made-up world, the heroines are always smart, sassy and independent. The heroes are handsome and strong with just a touch of vulnerability. If I don’t like a character, I can delete him or her; if something doesn’t work, I can rewrite it. It’s very satisfying to be in control of at least one part of my life. My inspiration comes from watching the people around me and fantasizing about how I’d do things differently.

Book Blitz, Teasers, and Giveaway: Sins of the Heart

Sins of the Heart
(Sins Series #1)

Eve Silver
Publication date: March 4th 2017
Genres: Adult, Paranormal Romance, Urban Fantasy

Library Journal raves the Sins Series is “…dark, seductive, and sexy as sin.” For readers who love paranormal romance and urban fantasy.

Dagan Krayl, the Underworld’s most powerful soul reaper, is the demigod son of the evil god Sutekh. He’s on a mission to find his murdered brother’s remains and resurrect him, but resurrection means that the secrets carried into death would be released and, with them, a war that could end gods and mankind alike.

Roxy Tam is searching for the same thing, but for completely different reasons. She means to make certain that the remains don’t fall into Sutekh’s hands, and that the soul reapers do not reanimate their fallen comrade. As a Daughter of Aset, Roxy is tasked with the protection of the human race, and if that means thwarting an all powerful soul reaper and making certain his dead brother stays dead, so be it. But when Roxy sees Dagan face-to-face, she realizes that she has met him once before—a meeting that changed her life forever.

Neither Dagan nor Roxy expects to join forces for the sake of mankind. Or to have their loyalties tested as they struggle against treachery, betrayal and the potent desire that threatens to consume them both.
