He caught her wrist as she moved out of his personal space. He had fast reflexes for a guy who had just been struggling to keep his hands interlaced behind his back. “Don’t stop,” he murmured, flashing that megawatt smile again.

She forced a chuckle. “Hey, I charge a lot for private lessons. That’s all you get for a

He threw his head back and laughed, a deep rumbling sound that warmed her from
the top of her head to the tips of her toes. “Well, how can I go about scheduling one of
those privates?”

She looked away, stepping toward the door and forcing him to drop her wrist. “Ah,
you know, check with the front desk,” she said vaguely with a laugh.

“Actually, I was hoping for your number.”

“I’m sure you were,” she said over her shoulder.

“Really? You’re just blowing me off, huh?”

She stopped and pivoted. He sounded dead sincere now, which surprised her. “Wow, yeah. About that…I’m, uh, not exactly dating right now.”

Even if I were, I’d stay way the hell away from a player like you.

Her smile wobbled. This shouldn’t be so hard.

He shoved his hands in the pockets of his gym shorts, which few men could pull off
and still look manly. He nailed it. She realized with a stab of guilt he was trying to hide the bulge of his erection. “Sure, I get it. No problem.”

Had she actually hurt his feelings? Impossible. He was a player.

She hadn’t meant to be a tease. She ought to be spanked.

By him. Just before he took her hard from behind…

Welcome to another #friday56 , book penguins!!!

I’m buddy reading #theneverlandwars by#audreygreathouse with the wonderful PandaPants @anneliselestrange , so figured why not use this#book?!

His eyes were steady in their intensity, but impish in all other manners. They impulsively surveyed the room, never lingering on any particular aspect of it, but always coming back to Gwen. A vine of ivy was wrapped around his waist and strewn across his shoulder like a belt and sash, just barely holding his tattered shirt and shorts to him. His clothes seemed held together with bits of twine and magic. He moved fluidly in his own skin. Gwen wasn’t even conscious of how much she envied his playful motion. Even with his gangly, broad shoulders, he stood tall with a childish sense of confidence.

My thoughts: I’m really going to enjoy Audrey Greathouse’s imagery! This initial introduction to Peter is so gorgeous and enlightening! I can’t wait to see what else this book brings to the table.
The Neverland WarsMagic can do a lot—give you flight, show you mermaids, help you taste the stars, and… solve the budget crisis? That’s what the grown-ups will do with it if they ever make it to Neverland to steal its magic and bring their children home.

However, Gwen doesn’t know this. She’s just a sixteen-year-old girl with a place on the debate team and a powerful crush on Jay, the soon-to-be homecoming king. She doesn’t know her little sister could actually run away with Peter Pan, or that she might have to chase after her to bring her home safe. Gwen will find out though—and when she does, she’ll discover she’s in the middle of a looming war between Neverland and reality.

She’ll be out of place as a teenager in Neverland, but she won’t be the only one. Peter Pan’s constant treks back to the mainland have slowly aged him into adolescence as well. Soon, Gwen will have to decide whether she’s going to join impish, playful Peter in his fight for eternal youth… or if she’s going to scramble back to reality in time for the homecoming dance.

Last year
Second semester

He’d been traveling for weeks, following the river westward. A great aerial beast
with a broken wing trying to follow the curving lines of a bigger, blacker beast on terra
firma. Beneath him, the Lethe River twisted and writhed. Every left turn was agonizing.

The wing, bent at an unnatural angle, caught wind where it shouldn’t. The drag was
enormous. He often felt as if he were drowning, his wings clasping at the edges of a
whirlpool whose edges grew taller and steeper as it closed in on him. And then he’d
have to push, soaring up into the air again with labored breathing that
sounded louder than a blue whale’s blowhole.

As he neared New Babylon he kept a keen eye on the water, searching for boats
and sails and men. Men who may not have seen a drakon in decades, perhaps longer.
Men who would sound an alarm and alert others to his presence. It was the type of
homecoming he wished to avoid.

So he’d flown at night and timed his arrival with the new moon. All below was black
and gray. Far off there were tall ships lit by lanterns, but closer (thank Luck
closer) was his goal – Bradbury’s docks.

A man without fire or an electric torch would have been blind. But to a drakon, the
world seemed drawn with charcoal and smudged with starlight. Another night, with a
different wing and the company he sought, he might have thought it beautiful.

He smelled the river and the city, the scents of men and the rich food they liked to eat.

Loud, boisterous voices rose from the waterside inns, saloons, and taverns. He
clenched his jaw and banked left across the water toward Etincelle, straightening again– or at least trying to – before he got too close. With a last, desperate push
up he rose above the Lethe, beating his inefficient wings against the
midnight sky, until he found warm air to ride down, circling… waiting… watching for
anyone who might still be at the docks. He did not want to be seen in drakon form.

He landed less gracefully than he would have liked, skidding to a halt just before
hitting a crate that would have tumbled into the Lethe had he not finally found purchase on the dock with his claws. With a last glance around, he shifted.

Wings collapsed. Snout, jaws, and teeth were reabsorbed. Claws disintegrated,
turning to dust. Tail wriggled and twisted, curling inward, like a snake eating itself.
Lungs and heart halved. And then halved again. Head pounding, body shaking, Ari fell
to his knees, his right palm pressed against the dock, his left arm cradled uselessly
against his side.

He was home.

Today’s #friday56 comes from #gregorymaguireand #afteralice !!!

I am so wanting to drop everything and #read this #book this second, but alas, it must wait! Have you read this one ? Thoughts on it, if so?

“Let me think,” said Rosa Rugosa. “No. Rosinathorn, Rosadolorosa, have you seen an Alice?”

Perhaps they didn’t know what an Alice was. Rosinathorn and Rosadolorosa refused to reply.

Ada hurried on. “It’s just that–well, if she’s here, I seem to have lost her.”

“Perhaps SHE has lost YOU,” said Rosa Rugosa. “You aren’t much in the way of sparkling companionship so far. You’re new here, aren’t you?”

My thoughts: first off, wow with the rose names. I think it’s safe to guess these are the lovely singing flowers. Secondly, I forgot how much I looooove Gregory Maguire?! Everything he writes is so entertaining!

After AliceFrom the multi-million-copy bestselling author of Wicked comes a magical new twist on Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, published to coincide with the 150th anniversary of Lewis’s Carroll’s beloved classic

When Alice toppled down the rabbit-hole 150 years ago, she found a Wonderland as rife with inconsistent rules and abrasive egos as the world she left behind. But what of that world? How did 1860s Oxford react to Alice’s disappearance?

In this brilliant new work of fiction, Gregory Maguire turns his dazzling imagination to the question of underworlds, undergrounds, underpinnings — and understandings old and new, offering an inventive spin on Carroll’s enduring tale. Ada, a friend of Alice’s mentioned briefly in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, is off to visit her friend, but arrives a moment too late — and tumbles down the rabbit hole herself.

Ada brings to Wonderland her own imperfect apprehension of cause and effect as she embarks on an odyssey to find Alice and see her safely home from this surreal world below the world. If Euridyce can ever be returned to the arms of Orpheus, or Lazarus can be raised from the tomb, perhaps Alice can be returned to life. Either way, everything that happens next is After Alice.

She woke up drowning. Her lungs burned as she struggled to suck in a breath, but got liquid instead. Warm liquid that burned like acid. Viscous, acrid liquid filling her lungs. She tried to flail her arms and legs, to get above the water. Something restrained her. She tried to scream, but sucked in more liquid. More burning. Oh God, she was going to die. And it would hurt like hell.

The restraints on her arms and legs popped free. Hands reached into the water to grasp her upper arms, lifting her out of the liquid. She coughed it up, hacking over and over, almost vomiting from the pain and effort. Then, with one long gasp, she breathed in clean, dry air. It tasted like salvation.

The hands that had rescued her let go, leaving her sitting up with her legs stretched out in front of her. She clung to the edge of the pool. Her entire body shook with a violence that rattled the glass.

She blinked. Glass? Her vision was blurred. She blinked repeatedly until enough of the bleariness cleared that she could make out her surroundings. She sat inside a glass coffin—at least that’s what it looked like—with wires attached to her chest and head, held in place by sticky pads. Her head pounded. Her heart beat so fast it hurt. The lighting, though dim, seemed too bright for her eyes. She squinted, blinked some more, and tried to make sense of what she saw.

The glass coffin was filled with a pale blue liquid, the thick, acrid-tasting stuff that had nearly drowned her. The coffin sat atop a table or dais. The wires attached to her body stretched down from the coffin, draped across the concrete floor, and snaked upward to a bank of electronic equipment along the nearest wall. Lights flashed on the equipment. Beeps echoed through the room. More equipment populated the rest of the room. A video camera on a tripod stood several feet from her glass coffin, its lens pointed directly at her. She felt it watching her, as if an evil spirit inhabited its circuits and chips.

The Exotic Essence of the Reborn Series

A common question every writer gets asked is what inspires you. The answer is never simple, at least for me, because I have so many different avenues for finding inspiration. Research, of course, plays a role. When I sit down to write, though, I’ve got one must-have inspirational tool–music. I feel naked writing without it, like I’ve forgotten to put on my writer clothes. The common mood of the Reborn stories is exotic and eternal, with epic drama, epic romance, and an otherworldly connection to the past. These songs epitomize the theme of undying passion intertwined with a destiny unfolding across thousands of years, the essence of Jake and Dawn’s romance.

1. “Eternal Odyssey” by Delerium, from the album Chimera. An instrumental song with a sexy, mysterious feel to it that conjures images of ancient ruins and forbidden love.

2. “From Here to Beyond” by Shani, from the album Velvet. An epic song about destiny, reminiscent of the struggles Dawn and Jake endured in their past lives.

3. “Harem” by Sarah Brightman, from the album Harem. A gorgeous song! ‘Nuff said.

4. “Awakening” by Sasha Lazard, from the album The Myth of Red. A beautiful, lyrical song based on Mesopotamian mythology.

5. “La Notte Etterna” by Emma Shapplin, from the album Etterna. It’s in Italian, but hey, Italian is sexy! And I love the mystical ambience of this song.

6. “Tangled” by Tina Arena, from the album Just Me. The lyrics, paired with the mysterious and sensual electronic instrumentation, bring to mind forbidden love — an overriding theme of the Reborn series.

7. “Immortelle” by Lara Fabian, from the album Nue. This one’s in French, but the mood of it comes through in the delicate vocal delivery and the music.

8. “Marco Polo” by Loreena McKennitt, from the album The Book of Secrets. An instrumental track with a Middle Eastern flavor, the song makes me think of belly dancers and camel caravans.

9. “Desire of Ages” by Sleepthief, from the album The Dawnseeker. Some songs just have a supernatural vibe, irrespective of the actual lyrics. This is one of them.

10. “Desert Rose” by Sting, from the album Brand New Day. Sting has written some truly beautiful music, and this exotic yet up-tempo track is my favorite of his — and perfect for the Reborn series.

#friday56 number four! I picked up #unlundun by #chinamieville at random for this post, and I’m so glad I did! If you love #aliceinwonderland , you should consider trying out this awesome #retelling

“They passed squat tower blocks, arches of brick and stone, the hotchpotch slopes of roofs. There were stranger things, too: sky-scraper-high chests of drawers in polished wood, spires like melting candles, houses like enormous hats and bats. Deeba pointed at gargoyles and pigeons on some of the houses, then started: some of the gargoyles were moving.”

About the Book:

Un Lun Dun What is Un Lun Dun?

It is London through the looking glass, an urban Wonderland of strange delights where all the lost and broken things of London end up . . . and some of its lost and broken people, too–including Brokkenbroll, boss of the broken umbrellas; Obaday Fing, a tailor whose head is an enormous pin-cushion, and an empty milk carton called Curdle. Un Lun Dun is a place where words are alive, a jungle lurks behind the door of an ordinary house, carnivorous giraffes stalk the streets, and a dark cloud dreams of burning the world. It is a city awaiting its hero, whose coming was prophesied long ago, set down for all time in the pages of a talking book.

When twelve-year-old Zanna and her friend Deeba find a secret entrance leading out of London and into this strange city, it seems that the ancient prophecy is coming true at last. But then things begin to go shockingly wrong.

Unfortunately, I read this BEFORE my days of review awesomeness started, so I can’t link you to my review.  I DID give this 4/5 Penguins, though!

Good morning, everyone, and welcome to another Friday 56!
I chose Between the Lines, by Jodi Picoult and Samantha Van Leer.  This book is SUPER adorable and full of fun illustrations and artwork–such a blast to read!
My chosen quote:

“People in the real world would kill for a happily ever after, and you’re willing to just throw it away?”

I look away from her. “It’s hardly a happily ever after when you wind up right back at the beginning. I’ve never experienced ‘after’ at all.”

About the Book:

Between the Lines (Between the Lines, #1)Delilah is a bit of a loner who prefers spending her time in the school library with her head in a book—one book in particular. Between the Lines may be a fairy tale, but it feels real. Prince Oliver is brave, adventurous, and loving. He really speaks to Delilah.

And then one day Oliver actually speaks to her. Turns out, Oliver is more than a one-dimensional storybook prince. He’s a restless teen who feels trapped by his literary existence and hates that his entire life is predetermined. He’s sure there’s more for him out there in the real world, and Delilah might just be his key to freedom.

A romantic and charming story, this companion novel to Off the Page will make every reader believe in the fantastical power of fairy tales.

“I’ve been told things happen as they should: my grandmother fell in love three times before her nineteenth birthday. My mother forms love with the neighbor boy when she was six. And I, I was born with wings, a misfit who didn’t dare expect something as grandiose as love. It’s our fate, our destiny, that determines such things, isn’t it?”

18166936Magical realism, lyrical prose, and the pain and passion of human love haunt this hypnotic generational saga.

Foolish love appears to be the Roux family birthright, an ominous forecast for its most recent progeny, Ava Lavender. Ava—in all other ways a normal girl—is born with the wings of a bird.

In a quest to understand her peculiar disposition and a growing desire to fit in with her peers, sixteen-year old Ava ventures into the wider world, ill-prepared for what she might discover and naïve to the twisted motives of others. Others like the pious Nathaniel Sorrows, who mistakes Ava for an angel and whose obsession with her grows until the night of the Summer Solstice celebration.

That night, the skies open up, rain and feathers fill the air, and Ava’s quest and her family’s saga build to a devastating crescendo.

First-time author Leslye Walton has constructed a layered and unforgettable mythology of what it means to be born with hearts that are tragically, exquisitely human.

The Twistrose Key
A striking middle-grade debut in the tradition of The Chronicles of Narnia and The Golden Compass

When a mysterious parcel arrives at her family’s new home, eleven-year-old Lin Rosenquist has a curious feeling she’s meant to discover what’s inside.

Much to Lin’s surprise, the ornate key contained in the parcel unlocks a spellbinding world called Sylver, hidden behind the cellar door. Sylver is an enchanting land of eternal winter, inhabited by animals that shared a special connection with children in the real world, either as beloved pets or tamed wild animals. In death, they are delivered to Sylver, where they take on a curiously human-like form and still watch over the children they cherish. While Lin is overjoyed to be reunited with her beloved pet, Rufus, she soon learns that the magic of the Petlings and Wilders is failing, and snow trolls want to claim Sylver for themselves. Lin must discover a way to stop them and save this enchanted world.

Full of charm, suspense, and heartfelt emotion, this memorable classic in the making will leave readers breathless.
