Excerpt from FROST (Midnight Ice, #1):

All she wanted to do now was forget. Forget Jax, forget everything he’d stirred up, forget her birthday. So, she downed another bloody cocktail, this time O-negative. And another after that. She let the feeding frenzy take over, let the high of fresh life wash through her.

She drank.

And danced.

And lost herself in the blood and the music and the touch of other cold bodies just like hers, searching for that little spark of life, reveling in it.

“You look good enough to eat,” a sultry voice whispered in her ear.

Pandora whipped around lightning fast, flashing her fangs. “I bite.”

The man smiled, lips practically dripping with sin. “Me too.”

Normally, this was when she’d punch and run. Seduction wasn’t really her thing. It just made her think of another boy and another time she’d never get back. But tonight was different. Tonight she wanted to be free. Tonight she was determined to move on, to move forward.

So she grinned back, taking the stranger in. And really, a girl could do worse, much worse. He was tall, broad, with bright golden hair that seemed almost aflame in the darkness of the club. His vampire-blue eyes were just as bright as hers, flashing with unabashed hunger, brazen want. His skin, though, was what really caught her eye. It was sun-kissed and bronzed, not pallid, not washed out by his ebony shirt. Somehow he looked almost warm to the touch.

Before she could stop herself, Pandora lifted her fingers, stretching for the triangle of hard skin at the base of his throat, exposed between two sets of open buttons.

He stepped swiftly to the side.

The darkness seemed to follow, wisps of ebony clinging to his frame, undulating with his every movement.

“Not yet,” he murmured, never once taking his eyes off her.

The longer he held her gaze, the more familiar it seemed to become, as though she’d seen those eyes before, as though this wasn’t the first time they had caressed her body.

“Have we met?” she asked.

His smile deepened, filling with secrets she could tell he had no intention of spilling. “Not like this.”

“Like what then?”

But he looked away without answering, sweeping his stare down to her lips, to every inch of exposed skin, lifting back to her throat, pausing there. She didn’t move. There was a dangerous sort of confidence about him, but against her will, she found it alluring, intriguing in a forbidden way. She’d always been drawn to things she wasn’t supposed to have. Usually, she took them anyway.

She reached out again, trying to touch him.

He moved deftly away, almost made of air as he circled behind her.

“Pandora,” he whispered into her ear, breath like a kiss against the soft skin of her neck, making her shiver.

And then the word he spoke registered.

Her name.

He knew her name.

“How…?” She spun around, trailing off when she realized there was nothing there, no one there.

A ghostly finger brushed against her elbow, tracing a burning path up her arm. “You’re not the only one who knows how to disappear.”

Pandora spun again.

But he was gone.

4.25Penguins
Quick Reasons: tidy, clean wrap-up to an action-packed series; I felt the element of surprise was a bit lacking; loved the use of POV, though a bit disappointed we didn’t get more from Sam; small character redemptions for the win!

HUGE thanks to Kaitlyn Davis for having me along for this wild ride and sending me a free digital galley in exchange for an honest review! This in no way altered my read of or opinions on this title.

To say this series was a hurricane sweeping through my reading world would be an understatement, Penguins. From the get-go, Kaitlyn Davis left me feeling a little bit off-kilter, as if she could yank the rug out from under me any time she chose (which she did, often and brutally!) I did feel as if this potential installment lacked a bit of that “element of surprise” feeling I’ve so grown to expect from this author. Even knowing this was the final piece of this puzzle, I went into this read hoping for one final satisfying plot twist, which I sadly didn’t find.

Shatter Q1.jpg

These characters arc gorgeously, though! There are several small, heart-wrenching redemptions written into the main action that caught me off-guard but left me endlessly pleased. Some of the smaller players were recognized and given room to breathe on their own a bit, which I enjoyed seeing. I was a tiny bit disappointed that we didn’t get more of Sam, however. His character, as full of hatred and darkness as he is, sort of took the backseat–he felt very stunted to me in this installment, honestly, which might not have been the best way to deliver him. I feel as if the story was lacking a huge amount of tension and drama that could otherwise have been present, with more of Sam’s POV.

This was, overall, a thoroughly clean and tidy ending to an explosive series, and I’m so happy to have been a part of the journey! I definitely recommend this entire series to readers seeking exciting new adventures, characters with huge hearts and big flaws, and action-packed epicness! The war is ending, Penguins; beware the shadows and their kin.

EXCERPT:

Chapter 1—Now

October 2014

“Fresh off of her book tour, I have here an advocate who is actively involved in fighting inequality in her daily life. I give you, Cordelia Quinn!” The rally organizer steps aside, and I can finally see the crowd. I wave, and the rally organizer gives me a dazzling smile before she continues. “Cordelia Quinn is the bestselling author of The Yellow Wood, a coming-of-age story about a boy and a girl who are best friends as children but choose different paths as adults and then come together later in life. She is also an award-winning screenwriter and one of the most outspoken LGBTQ allies in publishing. Please join me in welcoming her to the podium!” The crowd

breaks into thunderous applause that echoes through the cold air, and a smile pulls at the corners of my mouth.

I can’t lie—I’m nervous. I’m not good at hiding my emotions, so I’m afraid that people might be able to tell. I hate crowds, and I hate public speaking. I’ve managed to avoid it ever since I spoke at high school graduation.

“Hello, Topeka,” I begin. My voice is shaking. God, I hope no one notices.

The crowd is rumbling below me, waiting for me to say something good. I’m not even sure I have anything good to say. I’m so bad at this. But I’ve learned that being honest is usually the best way to go, so I decide to veer away from my prepared speech and try for candor.

“I’m going to admit something to you,” I say, gripping the sides of the podium to keep my hands from trembling. I can’t be trusted to hold papers or they’ll be shaking so much that I can’t read them. “I’m not a fan of public speaking, and I don’t usually speak at rallies like this one. But this issue… it’s really important to me. Those of you who have read my book know that. So, when my publicist asked me to come here and talk to you, I couldn’t really turn her down.”

The crowd cheers, and I smile and take a deep breath. With each breath, I feel more at ease, more comfortable speaking up here in front of everyone. I close my eyes for a second, trying to center myself. I see my children’s faces, and my grin widens.

“Honestly, I don’t have a lot to say,” I continue, gaining confidence. “I believe in equality. I believe in love. And I believe that the government should not tell us who we are allowed to love and marry.” At this, all I can think about are the people I left at home—the people who I love, the person I married. I’m lucky. I’ve never had to fight for those rights. “The politicians who are fighting against marriage equality are all active in their conservative churches—well, ladies and gentlemen, I find two issues with that. First, this country was founded on the separation of church and state—it’s in the First Amendment of the Constitution. What ever happened to that?”

I’m on a roll now. My hands have stopped shaking and everything.

“And second, marriage isn’t just about love. Anyone who has made that kind of commitment to someone can tell you that. There are legal rights that come with marriage that should be available to everyone, no matter who they love!”

I can’t help it. I start looking for him. He’s here. I can feel it.

And then I see him, and my face breaks open into the giddy sort of smile I wish I could contain. I knew he’d come. We’ve been apart for weeks now while I’ve been on my book tour, and I’ve missed him so much. Almost as much as I’ve missed the kids. God, I wish they were here with me.

As I make eye contact with him, an idea strikes. I decide to roll with it. “I’m very pleased to tell you that the person who inspired my book is with us tonight. I’d like to call him up here, so that you can meet the first man I ever loved—Declan MacLeod. Come up here, Dec!”

People turn to look at him as he shakes his head and starts moving toward me. I can nearly feel my body vibrating. I can’t wait to be next to him again, to feel his warm hand in mine. My smile is so big it feels like it’s going to split my face in two.

“I’m going to kill you,” he whispers in my ear as he wraps his arms around me. I want him to hold me forever, to never let go of me, to keep me safe and warm wrapped in his strong arms. But we’re in front of all of these people. He has to let go.

“No, you’re not,” I murmur back. “You’re better at this stuff than I am. Tell them something. Anything.” He starts chewing on his bottom lip as he thinks, and I throw him a sharp look. I’ve been on him about that since high school, but he always slips back into the old habit when we’re apart.

He makes his way to the podium and clears his throat. “Hello,” he starts as he waves at the crowd. “I had no idea that I was going to be speaking here tonight, so I apologize if what I say doesn’t make any sense.” He takes a deep breath and glances back at me. “As Cordelia mentioned, I’m Declan MacLeod. I grew up across the street from her in Hamden, Connecticut. Now, I spend most of my time in New York, performing on Broadway.”

The crowd is hypnotized, and I don’t blame them. I’ve been told that, together, Dec and I are hypnotic. We have an energy. I’m not sure I agree—I think he’s the one who radiates energy and charisma, whose skin feels electrifying, no matter how many times I touch it.

As I watch him look out into the crowd, I know one thing—he’s everything. He’s my reason, my why. He’s it for me. I’d be nothing without him.

Flora is convinced that Drake is responsible for restoring her memory and making her whole again. So when an encouraging email from Drake suggests she meet him on the other side of the world, Flora knows with certainty that this is the first step toward reclaiming her life.

But from the moment she arrives in the arctic, nothing is quite as it seems, and Flora must “be brave” if she is ever to learn the truth about herself, and to make it safely home.

It Started With Goodbye

Sixteen-year-old Tatum Elsea is bracing for the worst summer of her life. After being falsely accused of a crime, she’s stuck under stepmother-imposed house arrest and her BFF’s gone ghost. Tatum fills her newfound free time with community service by day and working at her covert graphic design business at night (which includes trading emails with a cute cello-playing client). When Tatum discovers she’s not the only one in the house keeping secrets, she finds she has the chance to make amends with her family and friends. Equipped with a new perspective, and assisted by her feisty step-abuela-slash-fairy-godmother, Tatum is ready to start fresh and maybe even get her happy ending along the way.

A modern play on the Cinderella story arc, Christina June’s IT STARTED WITH GOODBYE shows us that sometimes going after what you want means breaking the rules.

The Year We Fell Apart

Few things come as naturally to Harper as epic mistakes. In the past year she was kicked off the swim team, earned a reputation as Carson High’s easiest hook-up, and officially became the black sheep of her family. But her worst mistake was destroying her relationship with her best friend, Declan.

Now, after two semesters of silence, Declan is home from boarding school for the summer. Everything about him is different—he’s taller, stronger…more handsome. Harper has changed, too, especially in the wake of her mom’s cancer diagnosis.

While Declan wants nothing to do with Harper, he’s still Declan, her Declan, and the only person she wants to talk to about what’s really going on. But he’s also the one person she’s lost the right to seek comfort from.

As their mutual friends and shared histories draw them together again, Harper and Declan must decide which parts of their past are still salvageable, and which parts they’ll have to let go of once and for all.

Shade Chaser (City of Crows, #2)

A wizard, a werewolf, and a watchmaker walk into a bar…and don’t come out alive.

Two months after the infamous Etruscan incident, it’s back to normal for DSI—as normal as life can be when you hunt monsters on a salary. The rest of Nick Riker’s elite team has finally returned from France. Cooper Lee has healed from his nightmare trip to the Eververse. The remnants of the battles with Charun and Tuchulcha have been swept under the rug. And the exploding boathouse in Holden Park has (almost) been rebuilt.

All is calm in Aurora, Michigan.

Until a grisly triple murder in one of the city’s most popular bars destroys the delicate balance between three powerful forces. A high-ranking werewolf, a seasoned wizard, and a former mayor turned watchmaker wind up in body bags, and their deaths pit the ICM, DSI, and Aurora’s largest wolf pack against each other in a blame game of epic proportions. And as the accusations spiral out of control, threatening a supernatural war on Aurora’s streets, it’s up to Riker’s team to keep the peace before blood stains the sidewalks.

Meanwhile, Cal is struggling to overcome the consequences of his trip to the Etruscan Underworld. Haunted by visions of the future in the form of disorienting déjà vu, he’s terrified he’ll fail his team at crucial moments. But with the threat of violent riots hanging in the air, Cal has no choice but to power through and pray for the best.

Because one misstep on this case could mean the downfall of the city he loves.

4Penguins
Quick Reasons: entertaining, complex characters; unique world-building; ASSASSINS!; tons of action and drama; snark and sass in abundance; I am SUPER intrigued; Libby’s voice is vibrant, distinct, and SO fun to read from!

Huge thanks to B.R. Kingsolver and Ultimate Fantasy Books for sending me a free digital copy of this title in exchange for an honest review! This in no way altered my read of or opinions on this book.

ca-quote1

Okay, penguins–THIS was a super entertaining read! Let’s start with the simple things: the plot. There is SO MUCH action and drama crammed into every corner of this book, you’ll feel like your eyeballs are being tugged in several different directions trying to follow it all–and trust me, if you’re anything like I am, you’ll LOVE every second of it! The journey is intense, though also broken up by a measure of sass and snark I wish I found more often in my characters. (though to be honest, I’ve been finding a lot MORE of these sorts of characters in my books lately, so yay for that!)

Libby is probably one of the most entertaining, humorous voices I’ve read from in several weeks now. Granted, I haven’t had much time to read, because I moved and started a new job and WHO HAS THE TIME FOR THIS?! But this book sucked me in and threatened to throttle me until the very end; I found myself leaning on my reading gas gauge full-force, trying to figure out whodunit and put the clues together. I was wrong…and that was just as delicious as the read itself.

CA Quote2.png

B.R. Kingsolver crafted an entertaining, complex journey complete with a snarky, fiercely independent main character…who just so happens to be a mutant AND an assassin. I have to admit, when I started this book, I wasn’t sure I’d like it–assassins are fun and all, but not always my cup of tea. The fact that Libby’s sort of portrayed as a well-balanced antihero really worked for this read, though–and I loved her all the more for it, because it gave her character a bit more complexity than I was expecting.

I really, really enjoyed this book, and cannot WAIT to get my hands on the second in the series–I’ll definitely be watching for it impatiently in the future! The characters are well-rounded and surprising, the writing is fast-paced, and the snark is (just as all good snark should be) on point. I’d recommend this read to lovers of urban fantasy, assassins, and an overall good time. Put on your Kevlar vests and take the bullet, penguins–this book will leave bruises you’re bound to love!

Cover Reveal: Rose Petal Graves

facebook-rose-petal-graves

 Genre: Paranormal/Faeries
Release Date: March 29th 2017

 rpg-front

Summary:

ANCIENT SECRETS CANNOT REMAIN BURIED FOREVER.

Founded two centuries ago by a powerful tribe of Gottwa Indians, Rowan was a quiet town, so quiet that I fled after graduation. Staying away was the plan, but Mom died suddenly.

Dad said she suffered a stroke after she dug up one of the ancient graves in our backyard, which happens to be the town cemetery. Creepy, I know. Creepier still, there was no corpse inside the old coffin, only fresh rose petals.

As we made preparations for Mom’s burial, new people began arriving in Rowan, unnervingly handsome and odd people. I begged them to leave, but they stayed, because their enemies—my ancestors—were beginning to awaken.

 About the Author:

Olivia Wildenstein grew up in New York City, the daughter of a French father with a great sense of humor, and a Swedish mother whom she speaks to at least three times a day. She chose Brown University to complete her undergraduate studies and earned a bachelor’s in comparative literature. After designing jewelry for a few years, Wildenstein traded in her tools for a laptop computer and a very comfortable chair. This line of work made more sense, considering her college degree.

When she’s not writing, she’s psychoanalyzing everyone she meets (Yes. Everyone), eavesdropping on conversations to gather material for her next book, baking up a storm (that she actually eats), going to the gym (because she eats), and attempting not to be late at her children’s school (like she is 4 out of 5 mornings, on good weeks).

Wildenstein lives with her husband and three children in Geneva, Switzerland, where she’s an active member of the writing community.

Who's That Girl

Junior Nattie McCullough is totally OK with her place in life: Latin whiz. Member of the school’s gay-straight alliance. Joni Mitchell superfan. Seventeen-year-old who has never been kissed. So when last summer’s crush and her former classmate—Young Lungs lead singer Sebastian Delacroix—comes back to town with his new hit single “Natalie,” she can’t bring herself to believe it could possibly be about her…could it?

As Nattie sorts through the evidence (the lyrics, Sebastian’s elusive text messages, and their brief romantic encounter last year), the song’s popularity skyrockets, and everyone starts speculating about “Natalie’s” identity. If that wasn’t mortifying enough, Nattie runs into another problem: her confusing, flirtation-packed feelings for her good friend Zach. With her once-average life upended, Nattie is determined to figure out once and for all if her short-lived past with Sebastian was something love songs are made of—or just a one-hit wonder.

Why I want it:

A quasi love-story slash love mystery?!  I mean c’mon, how many of us obsessed over secret crushes or anonymous loves?  I don’t know about you all, but I received a good amount of anonymous love notes in my middle school days…and I adored them more BECAUSE they were secrets.  So yeah, this book?  I think it might bring up a fair amount of nostalgia for me.

It's Not Like It's a Secret

Sixteen-year-old Sana Kiyohara has too many secrets. Some are small, like how it bothers her when her friends don’t invite her to parties. Some are big, like that fact that her father may be having an affair. And then there’s the one that she can barely even admit to herself—the one about how she might have a crush on her best friend.

When Sana and her family move to California she begins to wonder if it’s finally time for some honesty, especially after she meets Jamie Ramirez. Jamie is beautiful and smart and unlike anyone Sana’s ever known. There are just a few problems: Sana’s new friends don’t trust Jamie’s crowd; Jamie’s friends clearly don’t want her around anyway; and a sweet guy named Caleb seems to have more-than-friendly feelings for her. Meanwhile, her dad’s affair is becoming too obvious to ignore anymore.

Sana always figured that the hardest thing would be to tell people that she wants to date a girl, but as she quickly learns, telling the truth is easy… what comes after it, though, is a whole lot more complicated.

Why I want it:

I mean….diversity, intrigue, and all sorts of delicious drama seem to abound in this read, and that’s SUPER exciting (for me, at least, I dunno about all of you penguins).  It just sounds so good, I want to dive into it right now!  So…gimme?!

Her Dangerous Visions (Song of the Worlds #1)

Two women, two worlds, one epic destiny.

On the world of Loam, disturbing visions plague Winter’s mind. Made a Seer by the gods, she must either cower away from the terrifying visions of the future, or face them head on and risk her life to fulfill her dangerous calling.

On the world of Hearth, Meluscia is determined to save her kingdom from the monstrous creatures crawling out of the wastelands, but first she must convince her dying father she is fit for the throne. But her schemes to gain power must survive her desperate longing for intimacy, for if she is to rule the Blue Mountain Realm, she must abide by the scriptures and forsake the love of a man.

A genre BLENDING series set in a vast fantasy universe where elements of science fiction are dominated by gods and monsters, visions and gifts.

addtogoodreads

Why I want it:

I’ve always loved books that blend genres and make certain tropes into entirely different beings.  This book blurb promises to do just these things…and to be entertaining at the same time.  Needless to say, I’m pretty stoked about this series, and hope to pick it up in the future.

The Swan Kingdom

Shadows have fallen across the beautiful and lush Kingdom. The queen was attacked by an unnatural beast, and the healing skills of her daughter, Alexandra, cannot save her. Too soon the widowed king is spellbound by a frightening stranger – a woman whose eyes reflect no light. In a terrifying moment, all Alexandra knows disappears, including her beloved brothers, leaving her banished to a barren land unlike her own.

Alexandra has more gifts than even she realizes as she is confronted with magic, murder, and the strongest of evil forces. She is unflinchly brave and clever as she struggles to reclaim what she knows is rightfully hers.

This new voice in fantasy weaves a tale rich in visual detail, peppered with a formidable destructive force, and sweetened with familial and romantic love.

Why I want it:

The lovely PANDAPANTS! recommended this to me, as it’s a retelling of The Wild Swans.  I’ve read a few retellings of this particular fairy tale in the past, and have to admit that it’s one of my faaaaaavorites–which means, obviously, that I need to read MORE retellings of it, because why not?!

Just Read (Squirrel) Art Print

So….we all know I’m a HUGE sucker for watercolors, right?!  So this hits that spot pretty spot-on, first off.  Also, I just adore the colors, and the cuuuuuuute little…are they squirrels?  I think they’re squirrels.  And just… Gah.  ADORBS, okay?!

Read Art Print

I love that you can sort of interpret this as you will.  Are the animals ACTUALLY there, or just part of the story she’s reading?  Anyway you look at it, you just know that she’s reading something awesome.

READ Art Print

Okay, so THIS is adorable.  I absolutely adore how unique this idea is, too–I’ve never seen anything quite like this done before, and I just… So much creativity?!  I don’t know what to do with myself, but I feel like I NEED this print in my life.

Bookshelf Art Print

If you can tell me honestly that you don’t immediately see why I was drawn to this one, we can’t be friends anymore.  Just…take a moment.  Step back.  Study it.  And I mean REAAAAAALLY study it.  I’m sure it’ll come to you…

Eat, Read, and be Merry... Art Print

I mean…can you even argue?  I guess you could, but it wouldn’t make much sense, because…HELLOOOOOOO, truth!  I’d love to just, like… This one might have to go up on my wall someday.  I love it so much.
