A Near Future Retelling of Beauty and the Beast

Watch the Book Trailer

Alainn’s father is not a bad man. He’s a genius and an inventor. When he’s hired to create the robot Rose, Alainn knows taking the money is a mistake.

Rose acts like a human. She looks exactly like Alainn. But, something in her comes out wrong.

To save her father from a five year prison sentence, Alainn takes Rose’s place. She says goodbye to the sun and goes to live in a tower no human is allowed to enter. She becomes the prisoner of a man no human is allowed to see.

Believing that a life of servitude lies ahead, Alainn finds a very different fate awaits her in the company of the strange, scarred recluse.

4.75Penguins
Quick Reasons: this is terrifyingly realistic; LOVELOVELOVE the small nods to the original, interspersed with new ideas from Rita Stradling; entertaining, heart-wrenching, and horrifying all at once; there are some very mature themes and situations found in these pages; believable, complex, well-rounded characters

Huge, HUGE thanks to Rita Stradling and Lola’s Blog Tours for granting me free early access to this title in exchange for an honest review! This in no way altered my read of or opinions on this book.

First off–LOOK at the gorgeousness that is this cover! I mean seriously, I could not have imagined a prettier, more perfect cover for this book. I LOVELOVELOVE the inspiration that is so obviously drawn from the read (the gears and bolts and whatnot behind the silhouette–there’s obviously a tone of science fiction set here!) So just… A++ and two penguin feet WAY up for cover design, it’s what initially drew me to this book.

AND THEN! I found out! this is a Beauty and the Beast retelling, and you all know I flipped my silly penguin beak totally upside down and jumped all over this opportunity. Because…ugh, my favorite fairy tale. My favorite Disney movie. I need more retellings like this one in my life, on top of this, because seriously, Rita Stradling did BEAUTIFULLY with drawing inspiration from the original story while maintaining her own sense of creativity and unique voice. Seriously, guys, I haven’t read a retelling quite as lovely and original as this in a LONG time–Rita Stradling wins, in my book.

en-quote2

The characters are complex, well-rounded, and so true to the “originals” while being uniquely written I can’t even. Also, I just realized who this book’s Gaston is and OH MY PENGUINS I can’t believe I didn’t put that connection together in the middle of reading. Holy beaks, penguins, it’s just so fitting and…GAH! I will break off my little love-fest for a second, though, because I have a bit of a trigger warning. There are mentions of: abuse, possible rape, assault, attempted murder, and murder. While the scenes are not in any way explicit or overly detailed, keep this in mind while reading please, and keep yourselves safe if you’re triggered by these things in any way!

ensnared-rita-stradling-promo-2

Overall, I had a HUGELY awesome time reading this book, and cannot wait to get my hands on more of Rita Stradling’s writing in the future! The characters are realistic and well-rounded, the moral implications are terrifying and inspiring in turn, and the personalities are spot-on and still brilliantly unique. I need more Beauty and the Beast retellings in my life, penguins–if you know of any good ones, please send titles my way! For now, I’m going to go blow the dust off my shoulders and try not to fall into a reading slump!

HELLOOOOOOO, penguins!  It is I, your royal beakness!

I’m not sure how much I’ll be updating your fins today–since my last Stacking the Shelves, not a whoooole lot has changed really.  Let’s see…. people continue quitting at work (they’re dropping like flies, penguins.  LIKE FLIIIIIES!)  I’m going to be officially starting my OFFICIAL schedule in the near soonish future…meaning 9am-5pm…six days a week.  On the plus side, YAY OVERTIME!  On the negative side….there really isn’t one actually, so YAY that too!  Seriously, I’m really enjoying this job.  My bosses are fantastic, I’ve been offered a SUPER awesome promotion packet for when I take on the GM position, and I’m super enthusiastic about this opportunity–seriously, the timing could not have been better with all of these life changes.  Obviously something wanted me to be in THIS place, doing THIS work, at this exact time.

Keith apparently ordered the DVD shelves earlier today, so we’ll be receiving that around Valentines Day, which means YAY I can actually unpack some of my boxes finally (seriously, all my stuff is still pretty much in boxes.  Or hampers.  Or bags.  We really need to start working on sprucing up the apartment.)  He also informed me the other night that we will be celebrating Valentines Day with dinner out and a movie.  Having come out of a series of relationships where Valentines Day wasn’t really a big deal….this is interesting for me.  Because honestly, until he said something, while I KNEW subconsciously that VDay is a thing…I had forgotten?  the VDay is a thing couples actually DO?!  I’m so terrible at this game, I can’t even.

Wyoming is getting DUMPED on by mountains of snow and all I can do is sit here and laugh because I SO TOTALLY don’t miss that frickfrack right now.  I mean, we’ve had some cold days here…but…I’ll take this cold over the snow and the below zeroes and the ICK that’s happening back home.

I actually have tomorrow (Saturday!) off, so Keith and I are gonna do….I dunno what but hopefully something fun because I sort of need to get out of the apartment for a bit.  Maybe I’ll talk him into going to a movie, or something… SOOOOOMETHING DIFFERENT, at the very least!

Other than that, I’ve just been doing the usual–going to work (I went in like two hours earlier today than usual because YAY catering orders! boooo I’m exhausted.  YAY tomorrow off!), coming home, eating dinner and sleeping….rinse and repeat.  Oh, and also squashing ants, because apparently the last tenants weren’t clean at all and so we have those.  Little tiny ones.  EWWWW.  (side note…why is it I can’t get away from the pests, no matter where I go?!)

What’s been happening in your worlds, penguins?!

I am so freaking tiiiiiired, penguins.  Because I’m training to be manager, I’m working 6 days a week.  Now, some of those days are MUCH shorter than others…but that doesn’t mean I’m not exhausted.  I mean, I know I’m going to have to get used to it, and quickly–it sounds like I’m going to be working 6 days a week for the rest of ALL TIME (or at least, the rest of my days with this company, which could be a while)…and it’ll be more consistent hours, proooooobably something like 9am-5pm… so… I need to suck it up, right?

But right now, I’m tired.  And that’s okay.

I honestly don’t have all that much to talk about right now.  Like I said, I’ve been working like a maniac since… a week after I got here to Indy.  Keith and I currently don’t have days off together (often, at least) so we haven’t even really had time to do much aside from go to work and come home.  We spend the evenings together, at least–obviously on our computers, but we generally watch a movie or tv show or something as well.

We haven’t even gotten the apartment all sorted out yet!  We’re working, right now, on finding a shelf (or shelves?) for our DVDs.  We have one we want to get picked out–we just need to save up money and order it from amazon.  Then we need to find some more bookshelves–I think we’ll probably just go to Walmart and get more from them, as we already have two of the cheap ones and that way they’ll all match.  So, yeah, this means a lot of our apartment is currently still in boxes.  Which is fine, it’s not a BIG deal…but it doesn’t necessarily feel like “home” quite yet either.  Hopefully soonish we’ll be able to fix that.

And….yeah, I think that’s about it on the updates front.  Basically, I am a very tired penguin–and that’s going to probably be my life for a while to come.  YAY me!  At least I’m still managing to fit in reading, and blogging–though honestly, I haven’t blog-hopped in aaaaages and I miss it so much.  I really ought to carve out some time in my evenings to do that again…

For now, let’s talk about the BOOKS, shall we?!

HELLOOOOOOOO, from your favorite penguin!  I am OFFICIALLY in Indianapolis, Indiana–and I am SO super stoked about it!  I’ve been working on getting job applications sent around, and acclimating to the new place (although this is silly really, as we’ll be moving into a bigger place in mid-January).

My blood sugars have been a bit rocky the last few days; I’m hoping it’s just left-over stress from the move and all the traveling.  I might also be trying to catch a cold, so there’s that as well–that NEVER helps with blood sugars, and I don’t catch colds often, so… eh!

Keith bought me a HUGE stuffed penguin for Christmas.  Seriously, it comes up to my hip.  I had TWO huge boxes from him “under” the tree Christmas morning, actually, and was so super confused about what they were.  So, one was Bonekah–aptly named by Keith’s adorable son, whom I spent most of Christmas Eve and Christmas morning hanging out with.  The other was a gorgeous photograph of a sunset over some of the Colorado mountains, which he purchased at the art gallery in his home town.  Of course, I got other things as well–Santa came to visit for the kids, and left us all stuffed stockings.  Overall, it was a ton of fun, and I was sort of sad to see it end–though only a little, as I was ready for the next half of my adventure to begin.

One of my half-sisters, who I haven’t seen in something like ten or eleven years, has begun planning a trip out this way to meet up with me.  She lives something like four hours from here, and is wanting to get this way before she goes back to school.  I’m pretty excited about that–the last time I saw her, I was still in high school!  Hopefully it’ll be fun.

I’m trying to get back into a reading routine, as I sort of lost my old one when the traveling and family-time ensued.  Hopefully I’ll find a job fairly quickly and can incorporate my entire new routine together at once.  Hopefully.  But we’ll see what happens.

Other than that, it’s life as usual at the igloo!  How have you guys been?!  Have you missed me?!?!?!
