Down Among the Sticks and Bones (Wayward Children, #2) Twin sisters Jack and Jill were seventeen when they found their way home and were packed off to Eleanor West’s Home for Wayward Children.

This is the story of what happened first…

Jacqueline was her mother’s perfect daughter—polite and quiet, always dressed as a princess. If her mother was sometimes a little strict, it’s because crafting the perfect daughter takes discipline.

Jillian was her father’s perfect daughter—adventurous, thrill-seeking, and a bit of a tom-boy. He really would have preferred a son, but you work with what you’ve got.

They were five when they learned that grown-ups can’t be trusted.

They were twelve when they walked down the impossible staircase and discovered that the pretense of love can never be enough to prepare you a life filled with magic in a land filled with mad scientists and death and choices.

She struggles to feel human. Artificial (The Kepler Chronicles, #1)

In 2256, the only remnants of civilization on Earth’s first colonized planet, Kepler, are the plant-covered buildings and the nocturnal, genetically spliced bug-people nesting within them: the Cull. During the day, Syl leaves her home in the sewers beneath Elite City to scavenge for food, but at night the Cull come looking for a meal of their own. Syl thought gene splicing died with the Android War a century ago. She thought the bugs could be exterminated, Elite city rebuilt, and the population replenished. She’s wrong.

Whoever engineered the Cull isn’t done playing God. Syl is abducted and tortured in horrific experiments which result in her own DNA being spliced, slowly turning her into one of the bugs. Now she must find a cure and stop the person responsible before every remaining man, woman, and child on Kepler is transformed into the abomination they fear.

He struggles not to.

For Bastion, being an android in the sex industry isn’t so bad. Clubbing beneath the streets of New Elite by day and seducing the rich by night isn’t an altogether undesirable occupation. But every day a new android cadaver appears in the slum gutters, and each caved in metal skull and heap of mangled wires whittles away at him.

Glitches—androids with empathy—are being murdered, their models discontinued and strung up as a warning. Show emotion, you die. Good thing Bastion can keep a secret, or he would be the next body lining the street.

He can almost live with hiding his emotions. That is, until a girl shows up in the slums—a human girl, who claims she was an experiment. And in New Elite, being a human is even worse than being a Glitch. Now Bastion must help the girl escape before he becomes victim to his too-human emotions, one way or another.

HAPPY NEW YEAR to all my lovely, loyal book penguins!  I hope this year brings you all the epical awesome you could ever possibly want–remember, YOU make your life what it is.  So go out there and make it awesome, because I said so! (and because if you do, there’s bound to be a mound of pebbles and tuna awaiting you)

So, since it’s the new year and new years are meant to be all about “remaking” yourself….this penguin decided to do a sort of bookish resolutions post to start 2017 off right.  Except I don’t like resolutions, necessarily…so…let’s just call this my

Top 6 Bookish Desires

fishbreak

I will ACTIVELY participate!

because I have this naughty habit of signing up for ALL THE CHALLENGES….but never actually actively participating in them.  This year, I hope to change that.  I want to do the blog hopping, the friend-making, the book raving and the plot ranting.  I want to DO the thing, and do it correctly.  So I’m going to do my best to do just that.

I will lower my “want to read” number…at least a little.

And by lower, I mean…until the next time I go on a book adding binge, when it will inevitably go back up.  Because who am I kidding?  I’ll ALWAYS be adding books.  What I really mean is, I will try to read MORE of the books I already own.  Hopefully that works.

I will catch up on my read-to-review pile.

Because honestly, we ALL know I’m going to be adding more to it very very soon.  So…hopefully, by the end of this month, I’ll at least be caught up with the read-to-review books I already have sitting around.  Hopefully.  Keep your fingers crossed for me?

I will blog hop MOAR.

I started doing more of this in the last few months of last year, and really had fun doing it.  So I WILL, theoretically, keep this up and blog hop even more in the coming future.  Because FUN!

I will post as much as I can.

And by this, I mean consistently as well.  I have a ton of fun putting posts together, and have been trying to work on prescheduling as much as possible the last few months–admittedly, this has helped IMMENSELY.  So I will continue trying to schedule posts ahead of time, which leaves me free to add in any other posts that come up along the way.  It’s a good system.  I recommend it.

I will keep working with authors/publishers.

Because I might sometimes feel a little bit over my head with blog posts and review reads, but I LOVE working with all of you guys, and will continue doing my best to do exactly that.  Seriously, working with authors and publishers–and all of you lovely penguins, too!–has brought some of the greatest joy to my life so far, so…it’s only right that I keep that going, right?!  I think so!

BLAHBLAHBLAH here’s all the same words you’ve been seeing from me for FOREVER why don’t I just tell you what the theme is this week?!?!?!?!

My Top Seven Favorite Music Videos (as of this second right now because my favorites are CONSTANTLY changing)

fishbreak

Not going to lie, mouthful title is a MOUTHFUL! Whew!

There’s just something I LOOOOOVE about this video?  I don’t even know if I can explain it.  Those scenes with the black costumes and the gold skin jewels, though?!  Those are BOMB.  I mean, I’m not gonna lie–Hilary Duff is also bae.  My love for her is nevereeeeeeending.

I don’t think this song would be NEARLY the same had I not listened to it the first time while watching this music video.  I just… SO MUCH of this story is told through the video?  I wouldn’t have gotten the same story just listening to the lyrics.

I LOOOOOVELOVELOVE all the colors–it’s such a stunningly beautiful visual.  The water scenes are also gorgeous, and… Okay, this whole video is gorgeous?! SO MANY KUDOS to the director, seriously.

This is a difficult watch, penguins–but so gorgeously done?  I mean, there’s not much else I can say but that.

I just adoooooooooooore how this song was put together.  Seriously, everything about this video screams gorgeous to me.  I love it so hard.

Again, this song wouldn’t have QUITE the same impact on me if I hadn’t watched the music video to begin with.  The story being told here…it’s so disturbing, and terrifying, and…Gaaaaaah.  If you watch just ONE of these videos, make it this one, okay?

I KNOW, I KNOW, this song and video are SO super dirty, but I LOOOOOOVE them so much?  I don’t even know…I can’t even explain… I HAVE A PROBLEM, okay?!

Well, here’s the thing.  Her name is Annelise.  We intend to take over the world together and DOMINATE EVERYONE with our bookish awesome.  She is Queen.  She listens to me rant and whine.  She lets me be the weird penguin I am without judging.

“BUT BETH!” I’m sure you’re asking.  “HOW DARE YOU?!?!?!  How CAN you?!?!  WHAT ARE YOU DOING!?”

So…let’s talk this through.  Like calm, rational penguins who haven’t yet found their perfect pebbles and are adults and CAN LURVE WHOEVER THEY WANT, OKAY?!

I give you…

Top Five Reasons It’s TOTES OKAY to Love a Panda (if You’re a Penguin)

fishbreak

You Share a Color Scheme

Image result for panda gif

Who else?!?!?!?! can say that they can match you in almost any situation because HELLO YOU’RE BOTH MADE OF BLACK AND WHITE FLOOF!  Pandas and penguins totes get along for this reason alone, okay.  You can’t convince me otherwise.

Opposites Attract

Image result for panda gif

Where penguins are generally the quiet, shy, RUN AWAY AT EVEN THE SLIGHTEST NOISE BECAUSE OH MY IT’S GOING TO EAT ME! type…pandas are naturally curious, trend-setting, and packed with courage.  So it makes sense to always stick close to one–they’ll keep you safe from the big scary!

You’ll Klutz Together

Related image

Because penguins and pandas are probably some of the BIGGEST klutzes in the animal kingdom.  Instead of laughing and walking away….you can laugh and help your friend up!  #totalwin #beafriend

Related image

There’s a Deal to Strike

Related imagePenguins have sharp beaks and vast swimming maneuvers to better catch the fish that they call food (this is not Finding Nemo, okay?! FISH ARE NOT FRIENDS!) Pandas have large paws and sharp claws to better pick up and sort of grasp those pesky pretty pebbles.  Why not strike a deal–and get what you BOTH want?!

They’ll Never Let You Down

Image result for panda gif I mean…unless you’re already falling, and then they’ll probably help you hit the ground.  But…what friend wouldn’t?!  It’s totes okay to trip a friend, so long as you’re there to help them back up, RIIIIIGHT?!  And if you’re tripping them into a pile of your favorite books… well, so much the better!

So tell me… do you still think it’s wrong of me to love a panda?

The Gallery of Unfinished Girls Mercedes Moreno is an artist. At least, she thinks she could be, even though she hasn’t been able to paint anything worthwhile since her award-winning piece Food Poisoning #1 last year.

Her lack of inspiration might be because her abuela is lying comatose in faraway Puerto Rico after suffering a stroke. Or the fact that Mercedes is in love with her best friend, Victoria, but is too afraid to admit her true feelings.

Despite Mercedes’s creative block, art starts to show up in unexpected ways. A piano appears on her front lawn one morning, and a mysterious new neighbor invites Mercedes to paint with her at the Red Mangrove Estate.

At the Estate, Mercedes can create in ways she never has before. She can share her deepest secrets and feel safe. But Mercedes can’t take anything out of the Estate, including her new-found clarity. As her life continues to crumble around her, the Estate offers more solace than she could hope for. But Mercedes can’t live both lives forever, and ultimately she must choose between this perfect world of art and truth and a much messier reality.

But when her sister Käthe is taken by the goblins, Liesl journeys to their realm to rescue her sister and return her to the world above. The Goblin King agrees to let Käthe go—for a price. The life of a maiden must be given to the land, in accordance with the old laws. A life for a life, he says. Without sacrifice, nothing good can grow. Without death, there can be no rebirth. In exchange for her sister’s freedom, Liesl offers her hand in marriage to the Goblin King. He accepts.

Down in the Underground, Liesl discovers that the Goblin King still inspires her—musically, physically, emotionally. Yet even as her talent blossoms, Liesl’s life is slowly fading away, the price she paid for becoming the Goblin King’s bride. As the two of them grow closer, they must learn just what it is they are each willing to sacrifice: her life, her music, or the end of the world.

The Bone Witch (The Bone Witch, #1) When Tea accidentally resurrects her brother from the dead, she learns she is different from the other witches in her family. Her gift for necromancy means that she’s a bone witch, a title that makes her feared and ostracized by her community. But Tea finds solace and guidance with an older, wiser bone witch, who takes Tea and her brother to another land for training.

In her new home, Tea puts all her energy into becoming an asha — one who can wield elemental magic. But dark forces are approaching quickly, and in the face of danger, Tea will have to overcome her obstacles…and make a powerful choice.

Memoirs of a Geisha meets The Name of the Wind in this brilliant new fantasy series by Rin Chupeco!

Top Ten Favorite Episodes from The Lizzie Bennet Diaries

banner

Because I loooooooove me some Lizzie Bennet.  In fact, I looooooove me some ANYTHING Pride and Prejudice, but I don’t feel I’ve obsessed enough in recent weeks.  Let me fix that for you all.

Find ALL episodes by clicking on the cast image right up there ^^^ .  Go watch…and enjoy!

Episode 14–I Really Suck at Video Games

I just….I sort of love?  the glimpse of sisterly affection and rivalry we see in this episode.  This is one of the first times we see Lizzie and Lydia actually SORT OF bonding, and I adore it.

Episode 37–Lydia vs. Mr. Collins

When you put Lydia Bennet up against Ricky…. Ahem, MR. Collins….you get a very awkward and hilarious mess.

Episode 45–Wickham Story Time

BATMAN!…. But seriously, this episode?  Full of teasers and foreshadows and….yeah, looking back on it, I should have known better.

Episode 58–Care Packages

Okay, y’all–Fitz is ABSOLUTELY one of my favorite characters in this web series.  Can anyone say ADORABLE?!  And quirky?!  And just generally epic?!  Because yeah, all of that.

Episode 83–Corporate Interview

This episode gives me LIFE.  LIFE, I TELL YOU!  And at the same time, in one fell swoop, it SNATCHES IT AWAY!  Gaaaaaaaaah!

Episode 94–Revelations

I just….there’s so so so much heart to this episode, I can’t even handle it.

Episode 98–Gratitude

YAS!  YAS!  YAAAAAAAAAS!

Yes, that’s all I have to say to this one.

Episode 99–Future Talk

Trust me, this one will get you RIGHT in the feels.  RIGHT THERE IN THE FEELS, MAN!

And because there are OTHER side episodes that go right along with these main ones…here are two of my favorite side eps!

Episode 25 of The Lydia Bennet–Kicks

This episode…. It hit me hard, and probably not for the reasons you expect.  See, the first time I watched this series?  I knew.  I sort of had an inkling.  And all it took was looking at Lydia in THIS video, and listening to her…compared to all the ones that come before.  This is still one of the hardest episodes for me to watch, because I’ve been here.

Episode 5 of Domino Application Demo–If Else

And this one.  Because Gigi shows SO much strength, and poise, and clear-headed determination… I admire this woman.  I really, really do.

Have you guys watched this web series yet?!  If so, what did you think–and don’t like, we all know you loved it!  😉  If you haven’t yet… WHY THE HECKLES NOT IT’S AMAZEBALLS?!?!?!

The Right Ways to Give Thanks as Book Penguins

Because HAPPY TURKEY DAY, penguins!

Are you partaking in the merry gobbler?  It’s okay if you are–we’re totally different from those waddlers, after all!  Also, if you don’t have turkey, you can’t have pie, and today is ALL ABOUT celebrating pie!  Best just be safe–eat the bird and be thankful it’s not you on that table! (though let’s be honest…. I’ve never heard of anyone eating penguin.  We’re just too fluffy and fancy and adorable, I guess!)

Speaking of giving thanks, today’s the day to do it!  So let me just set you all on the path to awesome and lay you the ways a book penguin does exactly this!

email

I mean, electronic communication is the greatest invention since tuna fish!  You don’t have to leave the igloo, there are no icky stamps to get caught in your beak, there’s no fight to make your wings GRASP THE PEN ALREADY…and you can, in essence, be completely anonymous!  The pros far outweigh the cons, I think.

I always like to include kind gestures in mine.  For instance… “I will watch your kids sleep, if you let me!” and “Let me stare at you while I clean your windows!”

Of course, no one ever takes me up on these?  Maybe I should work more on my word choice and less on flailing prettily…

devoted

And by this, I mean own literally every scrap of a word that has ever even considered falling out of the mouths of your favorite authors.  How?!  Well, get creative!

For one, you could follow them on every social media site ever.  Just copy/paste every status update, every tweet, every response comment….. (and if you’re feeling really inspired, you can THEN craft love notes to yourself from their words.  It’s meant to be, I tell you!)

OOOOOOR you could just pull a Misery and tie them up in your spare bedroom.  Blame the screaming and weird noises on the television, your family and friends will NEVER know the difference!

rave

In which I mean:  insult them in every possible way, because HELLO?!  You only pick on the people you love, right?!  Go ahead, call them mop buckets full of glitter glue.  Tell them their writing is the worst thing to happen since glow in the dark stars were invented…and by worst, you mean you want to make constellations on your ceiling with them.

And then!

Do the most horrible thing you ever could…and leave them a high star rating.

Just punishment, after all.  How DARE they make you love them so hard.  Now you have to share it with the world!

Okay, okay…so MAYBE there’s a reason people always shoot down my ideas.  You have to admit, though–I got spunk!  But let’s be serious for a minute, because there ARE ways you can thank the authors and publishers you work with and admire.  Here are some actual ideas:

–tweet out your love.  Remember to mention using the @name format, so they can see your kind words!

–snap a picture of those ARCs and share, share, share!

–mention how great they are on Facebook!

–send a thank you email?  I don’t know if this is even a thing, but…I think if you’re really close to the authors/publishing agents, you could get away with it.

But most importantly–keep being the awesome, lovely book penguins you already are!  This is more than thanks enough!

Happy Thanksgiving, guys.  Go eat a bird.

Top Ten FIVE Mythologies/Mythological Creatures I’d LOVE to See in More Books

Image result for phoenix

The Phoenix

I mean…have you guys ever READ the mythologies around the Phoenix?!  Some SERIOUSLY COOL things could be down with them in books, so…why aren’t they BEING done?!?!?  Do I have to write everything myself?!  Someone, please, bite the bullet and give us something awesome!

Image result for selkies

The Selkie

I mean, okay–Selkie mythology?!  Is fracking TERRIFYING, penguins.  If you haven’t already, go find some on the webs and read–trust me, you’ll be sleeping with the lights on for a few nights.  But honestly, I can only think of one?!  book that incorporates selkies, and while I love it to death…Well, I want more.

Image result for sirens

Sirens

And I don’t mean the ones that save you from drowning and send you on your way.  I mean the TRUE sirens–the ones that lure you in and eat you.  Because… I guess I want more horrifying books in my life?!

Image result for voodoo doll

Voodoo Dolls

Anyone else think this would be the CREEPIEST BOOK EVAR?!  I nominate Stephen King for the job.

Image result for trickster

Tricksters

The episodes on Supernatural that play with the idea of a trickster are, admittedly, some of my ABSOLUTE.  FAVORITE. EPISODES EVER!  So it’s not that much of a stretch for me to WANT to see books take on tricksters, too.  Right?!  RIGHT?!  Gimme!

And just for funsies, the runner-ups include:

Golems ; Djinn; Kami; Medusa; Pegasus

Shush now, my needy little penguin heart!

What are some mythologies/mythological creatures YOU’D love to see more of in books?!  Have any recommendations for books with the ones listed above?!  Let me know!
