HOSTED BY: The Broke and The Bookish
DESCRIPTION: Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created here at The Broke and the Bookish in June 2010. This feature was created because we are particularly fond of lists here at The Broke and the Bookish. We’d love to share our lists with other bookish folks and would LOVE to see your top ten lists! This week’s theme: Top Ten Reasons We LOVE the Online Book Community
I’m not even going to TRY to give you an excuse this week. I didn’t even LOOK at the topic, because I had something MAJOR planned and I wanted to see it through no matter what. So. My theme?!
Top Ten Things I Say Aloud While Reading
C’mon… you ALL know you talk when you’re reading. I’m not afraid to admit it.
This book is SO stupid!
Yes, I’m kicking off this list with the bad one. No, I’m not apologizing.
If these words fall out of my mouth during reading, it means: I’m disenchanted with the story/world; I’m disgusted by the characters; I’m bored stiff; there are very few redeeming qualities.
This. Is. Bad. This is also where my 2 and 3 Penguin ratings come into play. TRUST ME, I keep track–the more this sentence happens, the lower the rating gets. It’s like a Penguin Limbo!
Wait, WHAT?!
This usually follows a plot twist, though sometimes this also means I’m confused about something. Which leads us into…
I’m so confused!
I mean… Do I really need to explain this one?! Aside from stating that this seems to be my go-to phrase for mystery/thrillers, because…well… mystery.
What is happening?
Read as: I have absolutely no idea what’s going on but I kind of like not knowing so don’t spoil it for me. I know, it’s a mouthful. This sentence is an overachiever.
You (please insert choice insult here)!
My personal favorites include: idiot; bastard; meathead. This usually happens when a character does something I DO NOT LIKE. It also causes the hubby to look at me like I’m quite off my rocker (I mean…I don’t disagree.)
Wow, you’re annoying!
Sometimes this is followed up with, “but you’re adorable, so I forgive you.”
How. Dare. You.
Yes, I often talk to authors like they’re sitting right next to me. No, I don’t think this is problem. No, you can’t tell me why I’m wrong.
Don’t you do it!
Yes, I also talk to book characters like they can hear me. No, it doesn’t ever change things.
This book is gonna hurt me.
Have you ever gone into a book just KNOWING, without a doubt, that it was bound to shatter you into teensy pieces? Yeah, I thought so.
Angry, dying penguin noises.
Because sometimes, there are just no words to describe the HURTRAGE racing through me. In these moments, I am beyond broken. I am penguin goop.
And that’s it!
What do YOU most often say out loud while reading?! Have any funny or embarrassing stories to go along with this theme?! Feel free to share your thoughts with me in the comments, or link me to your own Top Ten Tuesday!
Until next time, happy book-ing!
I relate completely to this, especially to the random penguin noises. Sometimes a book can really get to you.

Right?! It’s been a while since the dying penguin noises happened–the last book to cause that was The Love that Split the World, which I read back in…February, I think? Something like that.

Annelise, I am SO glad you appreciated the post so much–that makes me super happy (mostly because the hubby is not such a book freak, and therefore always looks at me like I’m a little unhinged when I even so much as LOOK at books. Of course, looking entails petting in my world, so… XD )
What I’m trying to say is, thank you for stopping by! ❤

You’re most welcome, haha! My offline friends aren’t readers overall, so I understand you perfectly, haha! Every time I start laughing while I read, my mom would say that she needs to call my old therapist and ask for her money back lolololol

XD Non-readerly types just don’t understaaaaaaaand! I PROMISE, I don’t need a straightjacket!….I’m just, y’know, sobbing hysterically over the fate of a fictional character. Nothing at all to worry about!

❤ I've always believed I didn't HAVE a spirit animal, but seeeeeriously, I think penguins might be it for me too.

I say…a good mix of all of these things. It gets pretty entertaining sometimes. I’m sure the hubby gets a bit annoyed by it though!

I don’t think I can accurately express in words how much I LOVE and RELATE to this post. “This book is so stupid”, “WAIT, WHAT” and “[angry dying penguin noises]” are my go-tos when I’m reading.

This post is everything! I can relate to the “wait, WHAT?!!” and that dying penguin noise, I can’t even fully comprehend what noise I create lol, it’s like a mix of a gasp, moan, and every emotion at once. 😂😂💞

Hi, Louise!
I am SO pleased you like this post so much–that’s awesome! And “dying penguin” was the closest possible explanation I could think of, though…I honestly don’t know that it’s accurate. XD
Thank you so much for stopping by!

I love your post! Great topic. And I can totally relate.😁
Sometimes when the lead girl is about to do something unreasonable, I imagine banging her head in the table, face first. Brutal, I know. Lol..😁✌

Hi, Angie! I’m SO glad you enjoyed this post, that’s great!
I also imagine doing physical bodily harm to book characters. In fact, I recently had a review declined by Amazon because I threatened a character. I guess that’s a no-no? XD
Thanks for stopping by! ❤

AHHH YES TO THE PENGUIN NOISES. XD I love it! Although I confess that I …. rarely say anything out loud when I’m reading. OMG EXCEPT JUST RECENTLY. I finished Ruined by Amy Tintera and I just closed the book and looked at my dog and said “So so good.” My dog got up and LEFT MY ROOM. Like sheesh????? Manners???? Uncultured little swine. But that’s basically the only time I’ve ever commented on a book out loud.
I say all those things in my head though! Especially the “WUT R U DOING” kind of thing. ARGH. Sometimes characters need a hi five in a face with the chair of logic. XD
Thanks for stopping by @ Paper Fury!

Dogs just don’t know what the heckles is up most of the time. I hope you gave yours a stern talking to and that it never walks out on you in the middle of a conversation again!
It’s sort of funny, I only ever actually say things out loud when reading…when my husband is home. If he’s at work, or gone? Total silence. XD
Thank you, in return!
